The Teatro Olimpico, together with the Basilica Palladiana, is one of the jewels that Andrea Palladio gave to the city of Vicenza. It was the first permanent, covered theatre of the modern era, built between 1580 and 1583. When the task was entrusted to Palladio, at the age of 72, the Venetian architect decided to openly draw inspiration from the Roman theatres described in the works of Vitruvius. Thus was born a one-of-a-kind masterpiece of perspective, in which today you can still admire the scenery Vincenzo Scamozzi created for the inaugural show in 1585, Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex.
Address: Piazza Matteotti 11, Vicenza

In the year it opened, the Teatro Olimpico welcomed the first Japanese delegation to Europe. A monochrome in the theatre’s vestibule commemorates that event.
